Shanghai Masters 2014: Daily Update, 10/7
Round 1 action at the Shanghai Masters came to a close on Tuesday, with an eventful day of play where all but one of the seeds in action were dumped out the event. There was also a smattering of Round 2 action to talk about, with the rest of the last-32 matches set for a busy Wednesday schedule.

The biggest shock of the day and perhaps the year came when Chinese local Chuhan Wang dispatched Fabio Fognini in straight sets. It was the Chinese players first ever match on the ATp Tour and his current ranking is 553 in the world. Beating the 15th seed is easily his best achievement on the tennis court and he is rewarded with another winnable match against Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri.
Andy Murray stormed through his first set against fiery Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, but he allowed his opponent to get under his skin in the second. Gabashvili was going for his shots and it was his grunting that was angering Murray. The Russian had a chance to serve for the second set at 5-4, but Murray’s form returned, reeling off the next 3 games including 2 breaks of serve to earn a rematch with Jerzy Janowicz who crept through in three close sets.
Round 2
M Kukushkin beat (16) K Anderson 6-4 6-2
I Karlovic beat Y Lu 7-6(6) 6-3
Only two Round 2 matches were played on Tuesday, with Ivo Karlovic continuing his run in Shanghai after beating Marin Cilic in the opening round. South African giant Kevin Anderson was sent home prematurely, falling to a solid performance from Mikhail Kukushkin.
