American youngster Jack Sock upsets Kei Nishikori

American youngster Jack Sock has upset Japanese star Kei Nishikori in the Second Round of the Shanghai Masters. The 22 year old won the match in straight sets, taking his place in the Third Round of a Masters series event after a comprehensive 7-6(5) 6-4 victory. Many tennis fans see Jack Sock as the future of men’s tennis in the United States and he displayed all his talents in beating the hottest player on tour right now.

Nishikori came into the match brimming with confidence, on the back of a run to the US Open final followed by consecutive titles in Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo. With a partisan crowd, it would have been easy for Jack Sock to go into his shell, but instead he attacked the Nishikori defense and produced some stunning play.

Jack Sock’s biggest career achievement to date has come on the doubles tour, winning Wimbledon with Canadian partner Varek Pospisil. He showed that he could match that kind of performance on the single court and he is one of the youngest players inside the world’s Top 60.

The reward for Jack Sock appeared likely to be another tricky encounter against 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov, but the Bulgarian was upset by Julien Benneteau, setting up a Third Round encounter that Jack Sock will fancy he can come away with. Beyond this, Jack Sock could find himself in a match up with Swiss legend Roger Federer, an experience which will motivate him to progress.

His next career aim will be to enter the Top 32 in the world, as this benchmark will mean he is seeded for the Grand Slam events. This would mean he would avoid his fellow 31 seeds in the opening two round of the draw, which will allow him to run deeper into the majors.

The excitement surrounding Jack Sock was already significant, but after this breakthrough win, all eyes will be on him to see how he fares as the Shanghai Masters continues followed by the rest of the 2014 in Europe.
