When the Boston Celtics acquired Marcus Thornton in a trade this past offseason, the assumption was that the move was strictly salary related.

A free agent at season end, Boston could either let Thornton’s contract play out and clear the money off the books at season end or they could attempt to trade Thornton and his expiring deal. Those still seem to be the most likely of scenarios, though Celtics head coach Brad Stevens says Marcus Thornton will have the green light this year.
"Brad Stevens has chosen to let Thornton loose in Boston. The shooting guard won’t be seeing any red lights in Stevens’ offensive system. Heck, his light won’t even turn yellow.“He’s got the green light,” Stevens said, “because he can get hot.”"
Thornton has struggled since signing a big contract with the Sacramento Kings, though has proven himself to be a bit of a microwave player. When he’s cold, it’s tough to watch but when he gets hot, he can easily drop twenty points in a quarter.
Given the lack of scorers on the Boston Celtics, it seems as if Marcus Thornton will have plenty of opportunities to put the ball in the hoop though you can’t help but wonder if the front office/coaching staff is simply attempting to butter up Thornton’s value.
The former LSU standout doesn’t seem to have much of a future in Beantown and the Boston Celtics would be best served getting some type of asset in exchange for Marcus Thornton if they can. For now, it seems as if they’re hoping he can have a hot start to the season which will only increase his trade value.
