Despite the presence of Johnny Manziel, it is possible the Cleveland Browns could sign Brian Hoyer to a contract extension

The Cleveland Browns have been a bit of a surprise thus far. They are 2-2 with victories over the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans (in which they rallied from a 28-10 deficit) and their two losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens came in the final seconds.

Quarterback Brian Hoyer has played well, leading many to speculate he could be the future of the Browns at quarterback.

Even with Manziel in the mix, Luke Adams of Pro Football Rumors believes an extension for Brian Hoyer is possible if he continues to play well.

"Assuming Hoyer’s strong play continues, an extension certainly seems within the realm of possibility. But there was a reason the two sides were far apart in the offseason, and there’s a reason that former Browns CEO Joe Banner refers to it as “one of the toughest contract decisions on both sides” that he has ever seen (Twitter link). With Manziel in the mix, it’s still not clear if Hoyer projects as Cleveland’s long-term starter, which is presumably how he’ll want to be paid. Knowing they have the inexpensive Manziel as a fall-back option, the Browns won’t be eager to break the bank for Hoyer, and an extension would mean risking having him turn into the NFL’s most overpaid backup."

Although an extension isn’t impossible, it really doesn’t seem likely. It’s tough to see a team use a first round pick on a quarterback like Manziel and then decide to extend Brian Hoyer. Not only would the pick look like a waste but there’s a chance Manziel could continue to develop and take Brian Hoyer’s job. They’d then likely invest more money and Manziel and there would be entirely too much money tied to the position.

This season, Brian Hoyer has completed 82-of-132 passes for 1,008 yards with six touchdowns and only one interception.
