When the Washington Wizards decided to sign veteran forward Paul Pierce, they knew he’d bring not only talent but leadership to the court.

Through the first few days of the preseason, Pierce has done exactly that though he’s also helped the team improve their trash talking.

That’s the word from Washington Wizards teammate and guard Bradley Beal who told NBA.com that Pierce’s addition has resulted in more smack on the court.

“I think I trash-talk a little bit more now. (Pierce has) been good. Just being able to learn from him. He’s a true vet. He knows what it takes to get to that level that we need to get to.”

While Paul Pierce isn’t the typical ‘loud-mouth’ trash-talker like a Kevin Garnett, he has been known to throw some pretty nasty verbal jabs on the court. Pierce seems to be more of a witty trash-talker and boosts more about his skills and talent level than delving into personal information unlike some of the more notorious junk talkers.

The Washington Wizards already put their improved trash-talking on display as last week when Bradley Beal suggested they have the best backcourt in the NBA, a sentiment that didn’t sit well with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters. The two exchanged verbal insults which eventually included Beal’s teammate John Wall in the festivities, suggesting a bench player like Waiters should know his role.

Needless to say, the Washington Wizards likely didn’t need a reason to stir the pot this season though Paul Pierce’s addition and willingness to talk junk should create some interesting moments during the year.
