Thanks to Matt Adams and an unexpected emergence of team power, the St. Louis Cardinals are headed back to their fourth straight National League Championship Series after they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in four games on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory not only saved the St. Louis Cardinals from facing a potential elimination game in Southern California but keeps ace Adam Wainwright on schedule to start Game 1 of the NLCS against the San Francisco Giants. That is, assuming he’s healthy which has become a bit of a concern in recent days.

Adam Wainwright has been dealing with tendinitis for quite some time along with discomfort in his right elbow which has the Cardinals preparing Lance Lynn for a possible Game 1 start. At minimum, he’s expected to be ready in case of emergency.

“Just making sure that Waino feels right,” manager Mike Matheny said. “We’ve got two guys on regular rest it wouldn’t be a stretch to have either one of them go. There’s no question that Waino has been fighting it. I haven’t made that a secret and neither has he. It’s all going to come down to how he feels. The likelihood of him saying ‘I can’t go’ is very slim. But it is a possibility that something might not feel right.”

Wainwright started the season on fire though was pounded at home by the San Francisco Giants, so there’s no doubt he’ll be looking for a much improved rematch assuming he is to take the mound in Game 1.

In Adam Wainwright’s lone start of the postseason for the St. Louis Cardinals, the ace gave up six earned runs in just 4 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’s expected to be opposed by San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner.
