The Chicago Bulls spent a good portion of their May and June attempting to trade up for the 2014 NBA Draft in effort to select Doug McDermott.

They weren’t able to do so though did eventually acquire McDermott from the Denver Nuggets in a draft day trade that sent the Windy City into a frenzy. Fans loved the idea of what the polished McDermott would bring to the team while the front office was ecstatic with his ability to step in and play right now.

Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau was a little less enthused though as he’s not big on playing rookie talent nor is he a huge fan of those who struggle on the defensive end. Still, Doug McDermott has seemingly impressed Thibs through camp as the coach says he likes McDermott’s ‘swag’.

“I know where confidence comes from,” Thibodeau said. “Work and preparation. What do we call it now? Swag. We called it confidence back in the day. Where does it come from? People say, ‘Well, he’s a real confident guy.’ The thing that you find is that the guys that put the work in, that gives you confidence. Each game is a test. It reveals exactly where you are. In this league, you can’t skip steps.”

While McDermott is deserving of the compliment, just seeing Thibodeau use the term ‘swag’ probably made not only the day of Doug McDermott but his teammates as well.

The Creighton alum isn’t likely to get big minutes off the bench to start the season as the Chicago Bulls would like to see him grow into a role and get comfortable with such. He does likely figured to see a good amount of action after the All-Star break though as the team will be counting on his perimeter play for the postseason.
