MLS side Columbus Crew have had a major face lift, as the club realised the urgent need to “better align our brand with our city.” This process has consisted of a wide range of changes to the club, including a name change from Columbus Crew to Columbus Crew SC. Read through the full details of the overhaul here.
Perhaps the news that will garner the most attention is the change of the club logo as part of the widespread brand migration. Gone is the logo with the men in hats that many soccer fans considered to be the worst in the MLS and possibly even in the world. In comes a flash new logo, sadly with no men in hats, but representative of a new direction that the club intends to head in. The logo is slick and you could argue it would fit seamlessly into any European league unnoticed.
The re-branding seems to have gone down with the majority of the Columbus fans, who mostly seem happy at the prospect of not being ridiculed for the club logo. The wholesale changes that even include a nickname change from The Crew to Crew SC and club initials from CLB to CCSC show how serious the owners are taking this attempt at a new club image. It is another positive step, not only for the club, but for the MLS as a whole, as soccer continues to improve at an exciting rate.
The official unveiling of all these exciting changes to Columbus Crew came at a live event in downtown Columbus at the LC Pavillion on October 8. You can watch it below and skip to 42 minutes in to see all the details about their new image:
