FitBit snubs Apple HealthKit

FitBit users and health conscious fans, don’t expect a marriage of your favorite FitBit device and Apple any time soon. Apple announced HealthKit during its Worldwide Developers Conference this summer. With the success of the FitBit, some users have asked the company about a marriage of the technologies, but it doesn’t look to be coming.

Some lesser used fitness devices, like those from Jawbone, have already started to integrate in with Apple’s HealthKit. However, we now know that FitBit, the most widely used fitness tracker, won’t be joining the party any time soon.
On it’s forums, a user posted a question, and FitBit answered. It was first captured by 9to5Mac:
The bigger issue here seems to be that even if FitBit not working with HealthKit isn’t a big deal, the integration would lead to easier integration across multiple fitness apps.
There is some definite intrigue with FitBit saying, “We do not currently have plans to integrate with HealthKit. It is an interesting new platform and we will watch as it matures, looking for opportunities to improve the Fitbit experience. At the moment, we’re working on other exciting projects that we think will be valuable to users.”
In the response, it seems to be that FitBit is leaving the door open to move into an opportunity to work with Apple in the future. It would seem to reason that FitBit would want to work with Apple at some point, after all, Apple mentioned the company back at the reveal of HealthKit in June.
With the growth of smartwatches, there is likely going to be a decline in the overall use of fitness trackers going forward. However, until that downward spiral really kicks off, it would be smart for the companies in the space to take full advantage of the market.
FitBit owners, what are your thoughts?
