Liverpool open talks with Victor Valdes

Liverpool has opened talks with free agent Victor Valdes

Liverpool are closing in on signing Spain and former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer after the 32 year old became a free agent in the summer.

Valdes has been side-lined since March after suffering from an ACL injury, but his intention to leave Barcelona, the club he had been at for his entire career, had already been made.

Rumous were that the injury scuppered a move for Valdes to French side Monaco, as he was unable to undergo a medical. Now the likelihood is that Valdes will move to the Premier League with Liverpool.

Current first-choice Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mingolet has never been entirely convincing and despite a solid first season, a lack of high profile saves in the key moments means Liverpool are looking elsewhere to find a keeper who will provide competition to the Belgian.

Reporter Wayne Veysey has said of the progress of the move that ”Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Victor Valdes with the former Barcelona goalkeeper set to undergo a medical this month… Liverpool are confident of wrapping up the signing of the 32-year-old if he can prove his fitness.”

It would be a clever signing for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for a number of reasons. Firstly, now that Liverpool are back in the Champions League, they have to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. Therefore, bringing in Valdes on a free transfer represents a savvy buy for the club.

It also is a way of adding depth to the club. Competition for places is vital for any top club and it will ensure Mingolet does not think his position is assured.

Valdes also brings with him a huge amount of big game experience, having made 387 appearances for Spanish giants Barcelona since 2002. He was their first-choice for much of their golden years and has experience of the very biggest games. The more characters in the dressing room you have with this level of experience is always beneficial to a club.
