On Wednesday afternoon, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny subtly hinted that ace pitcher Adam Wainwright wasn’t himself.

He wouldn’t go on to say he was injured but it’s known that Wainwright has been dealing with discomfort in his elbow for quite some time. Many wondered if his dud of a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS had anything to do with Adam Wainwright’s health though Matheny suggests the St. Louis Cardinals ace is healthy as can be.

It’s completely possible that Matheny is being totally honest and Adam Wainwright is having no physical issues, though, this is a pitcher who destroyed anything in his path during the first half of the season and looked more than human after the All-Star break.

If there is a silver lining for Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals it’s that the All-Star arm was very good in his final four starts of the regular season giving up just two earned runs in those games. Still, there seemed to be a geunie cause for concern leading up to Thursday regarding the health of Wainwright.

As things currently stand it’s expected that Adam Wainwright will take the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 against the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship Series. If for some reason he’s unable to do so, Lance Lynn will stand in as the emergency starter.

They will be opposed by San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner who will be making his third postseason start.

Game 1 of the 2014 NLCS begins on Saturday evening at Busch Stadium.
