The USMNT are up to 17th in the Official FIFA World Rankings, placing higher than England, Croatia and Russia. It represents a continuation of the vast improvement of the national team in recent years, with head coach Jürgen Klinsmann bringing success to the side.
The rankings reflect the run to the Last 16 of the World Cup for the USMNT, falling to Belgium during extra-time in a game that could have easily gone the other way. They were given little chance by soccer pundits having been placed in Group G alongside Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
Playing in the “group of death,” they surprised everyone with a 2-1 over Ghana followed by a respectable 2-2 draw with Portugal, making it out of the group.
Inspirational performances throughout the team brought success to the USMNT that could well continue going forward. The spine of the team is extremely strong, with a mixture of experience and youth that often provides the perfect blend in a soccer team.
The upcoming friendlies against South American sides will be a great measure of how far the USMNT has progressed, with the team now going into both these games as heavy favorite, whereas a few years ago doubts would have been cast over their ability to beat this level of opponent.
On October 10 they play Ecuador in Connecticut, followed by another friendly against Honduras 4 days later in Florida. Both sides are known for their physicality and so the US will have to be up for the battle.
The games also represent a farewell send-off to legend Landon Donovan. He has been an inspirational figure at the forefront of soccer in the United States. He can be thanked for helping the rapid growth of the sport that has ushered in this new and promising generation of stars.
