Brian Hoyer continues to play well as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. If he has a good month in October, could the Browns get serious about signing him to a contract extension?
Johnny Manziel is the future for the Cleveland Browns at quarterback. The question is, will the future get here next season or three seasons from now? When will the job officially be handed to Manziel?

Brian Hoyer has bought the Browns time and taken the pressure off the franchise to go to Manziel anytime soon. With Hoyer’s solid play at QB, and with the Browns proving to be one of the toughest outs in the NFL with him at the helm, could the Cleveland front office reconsider signing Hoyer to a contract extension before he hits free agency this off-season?
The two sides had preliminary conversations of a possible extension, but those have appeared to wane. Still, with the cautious buzz that currently surrounds the Browns, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com writes that extension talks could start back up if Hoyer plays well this month:
"Brian Hoyer’s contract talks with the Browns have gone quiet since early summer, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, but perhaps that could change if Hoyer carries his solid play through October."
As for what the deal might look like, Fowler writes the following:
"Even if Hoyer puts together an impressive full season, what kind of deal should the Browns do? A two-year bridge deal or a loftier package with more years? Or do the Browns let him walk, knowing Manziel will be considerably cheaper on a four-year, $8.25-million rookie deal?Everything seems on the table, and October will provide some answers, though one answer is clear-cut: The Browns’ quarterback situation is better than at least a handful of NFL teams right now."
The Browns will have considerable pressure to play Manziel because they used a first round pick on him and because he is Johnny Football. But in pure football terms, Manziel is a project. The Browns would be wise to extend Hoyer on a modest deal to buy Manziel more time to develop.
That will certainly be an easier plan to follow if the Browns keep winning football games.
