While the former Creighton star didn’t light things up from downtown he did hit a three-pointer and shot a very effective three of six from the field. More impressive than that, Doug McDermott also grabbed eight rebounds in the tilt against the Milwaukee Bucks and dished out three assists in the process.
It was a very solid debut for the Chicago Bulls rookie who suggested his first start was a reflection of college.
“It felt great. I kind of knew in advance, so I kind of mentally prepared myself for [the start],” McDermott said. “It felt like college.”
If that’s how NBA life felt for Doug McDermott the Chicago Bulls have to be jumping for joy given how successful ‘Ray’ McDermott was during his college career.
As for his coach, he came away impressed with what McDermott accomplished in his first NBA start, though, wouldn’t have minded a few more shots.
“I thought very well, very well. At times he’s unselfish to a fault,” Tom Thibodeau said. “When he’s open, he’s got to shoot. Pass up open shots and then you end up settling for a tough shot. When you are open, you got to shoot.”
The Chicago Bulls didn’t draft Doug McDermott to be a rebounder nor a passer, though understandably the rookie likely wanted to make a good impression and come off as a helpful teammate in his starting debut. Next time it seems as if the Bulls will be asking for more scoring and shooting out of the Creighton talent.
Doubtful Chicago Bulls fans will be opposed to that.
