Stewart, who has been acting as DeAngelo Williams’ primary backup was hopeful to play against the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend but the Carolina Panthers running back will be out due to lingering ankle issues that have hampered the veteran all season.
The former Oregon star last played against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 21st though only amassed five carries before hurting himself though looked to be on the road to recovery. However the former first round pick couldn’t get through pregame warmups without feeling some discomfort and the team decided to sit him in effort to get Stewart healthy.
Normally missing your backup running back wouldn’t be too damaging but considering both DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert are out, the Carolina Panthers were really hoping Jonathan Stewart would be able to take the field.
It’s expected that both Darrin Reaves and Chris Ogbonnaya will see the majority of carries Jonathan Stewart’s absence though Reaves is expected to start the game for the Carolina Panthers.
If there is a silver lining for Carolina it’s that tight end Greg Olsen will play who Cam Newton may be able to use to offset the lack of a running game.
