In a key AFC East showdown, the New England Patriots went into Ralph Wilson Stadium and took down the Buffalo Bills 37-22 on Sunday afternoon.
Tom Brady, looking to build on his performance in a 43-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals last week, completed 27-of-37 passes for 361 yards with four touchdowns, compensating for a non-existent running game that managed just 50 yards on the ground. The Bills weren’t much better, rushing for 68 yards. Kyle Orton completed 24-of-38 passes for 299 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Turnovers were the story – the Bills gave it away three times while the Patriots did not turn the ball over.
The Patriots and Bills both struggled offensively in the first quarter but in the second quarter, they were able to take advantage of several Bills’ miscues.
On the first play of the second quarter, Orton was picked off by linebacker Jamie Collins, setting the Patriots up on their own 39-yard line. After a pass interference penalty put the Patriots at the one-yard line, Brady found one of his new favorite targets, tight end Tim Wright, for the score.
After the teams traded stops, the Bills drove 67 yards and on the 10th play of the drive, Orton found Robert Woods for a seven-yard score to tie things up.
After the Bills forced a three-and-out, Orton was sacked by Chandler Jones, who also stripped Orton and recovered the ball. Three plays later, a 42-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski made it 10-7. After the two teams went three-and-out again, C.J. Spiller fumbled with 14 seconds left, allowing Gostkowski to hit a 53-yarder to give the Patriots a 13-7 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Brady found wide receiver Brian Tyms on a 43-yard touchdown. Tyms made a great play in what essentially became triple coverage .
The Bills answered with a 13-play, 80-yard drive capped by a one-yard Fred Jackson touchdown to cut the lead to 20-14. The Patriots responded with another Gostkowski field goal, giving them a 23-14 lead.
After the Bills were forced to punt again, the Patriots drove back down the field. Rob Gronkowski had a touchdown called back but two plays later, Brady found Brandon LaFell for an 18-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 30-14.
On the next drive, Orton, who converted a fourth-and-two along the way, found Chris Hogan for a score. He then hit Robert Woods for the two-point conversion, making it a one possession game, 30-22. .
The Bills, needing a stop to stay alive, were in great position. The Patriots had to start on their own seven-yard line. However, they moved to their own 46 in nine plays, converting a third-and-16 on a 17-yard pass from Brady to Gronkowski. Three plays later, Brady again found LaFell, this time for a 56-yard touchdown to put the Patriots up 37-22 with just 2:49 to go. That would be the final margin.
The Patriots will be back in action Thursday night when they return home to host another AFC East rival, the New York Jets while the Bills will play host to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
