While Leon Spinks may not have as popular a name as Muhammad Ali or Joe Frasier, there’s no doubt he’s an icon to those in the boxing community which is why news of his hospitalization has many with a heavy heart on Monday.

Spinks, who you may recall actually defeated Ali in 1978 is said to be in serious condition according to TMZ.

"Sources connected to the 61-year-old former Olympic gold medal winner tell us … Spinks underwent surgery this weekend and there were complications during the surgery. We’re told the situation seemed dire at first … but Spinks seems to be doing better."

The entertainment website says they’ve reached out to Leon Spinks’ family though have yet to receive any word back regarding his condition. One person who is speaking about Spinks’ time in the hospital however is famed singer Tony Orlando who says Leon Spinks is ‘facing the greatest fight of his life’.

Hopefully Spinks brings out some of his trademark punches to fight off his surgery complications.

In addition to boxing, Spinks has also won the World Title in Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling and even made an appearance during Extreme Championship Wrestling, though understandably is most known for his impressive boxing career – both professional and Olympic.

Spinks finished his professional boxing career with a 24-17 record which included 14 knockouts, 11 decisions and one disqualification. He also participated in three draws.

It’s been a rough few days for the boxing community as on Sunday, Muhammad Ali’s brother stated Ali has become so ill he’s struggling to speak.
