Once the Los Angeles Clippers season comes to an end, so does the contract of center DeAndre Jordan. The big man, earning over $11 million dollars in the final year of his contract is said to be seeking a very large deal and he’s likely to get it.
The biggest question is who’s going to drop that type of coin on DeAndre Jordan? There are certain to be interested parties in free agency if Jordan is to get that far, though Zach Lowe of Grantland believes the Los Angeles Clippers will likely max out the contract of Jordan before that’s to happen.
"It will probably be the Clippers, just because Jordan and Blake Griffin are close, Jordan has become a valuable two-way center, and inertia usually wins. The Clippers could in theory interject themselves into the Durant sweepstakes by letting Jordan walk, getting by with Spencer Hawes for one season, and waving max cap room at Durant in the summer of 2016."
With the NBA’s salary cap set to expand in two seasons many franchises are being conservative in regards to how they spend their money, however the Los Angeles Clippers are in contention for an NBA title and suddenly becoming frugal (especially with Steve Ballmer at the helm) seems to be a step in the wrong direction.
Thanks to DeAndre Jordan’s Bird Rights, no team can offer the center more money or more years than the Los Angeles Clippers so it seems as if the two will likely agree on a very expensive though simple deal. The only hang up would likely be the Los Angeles Clippers opting to spend their money elsewhere, though that seems very unlikely given their salary cap situation.
