When Phil Jackson decided to have Derek Fisher install the triangle offense for the New York Knicks, most understood it would be a lengthy process.
While the triangle offense appears to be relatively simply on the surface, it’s actually a very detailed system which the New York Knicks are quickly finding out.
Just a few weeks ago guard J.R. Smith suggested the team wouldn’t fully understand the new offensive system for a few months and on Monday suggested the triangle offense is more complex than originally thought.
“You have to think the game more. It’s just more of a complex way that we play, [more complex] than we’re used to playing,” Smith said after the Knicks’ game. “We’re used to just catching and going, stuff like that. Now, cutting, making sure we’re getting in our right spots. It’s just a conscious effort I think.”
Smith wasn’t the only player to express a bit of frustration with the difficult learning process as Carmelo Anthony suggested similar feelings.
“I don’t have a choice but to make it work. We don’t have a choice [but] to make it work. Whether it [happens] now or it [happens] later, we don’t have a choice but to make this work. I told you all early on, I’m willing to take that chance to try to make it work and be patient with it.”
While the process may be difficult and the learning curve steep, it’s something that’s likely to benefit the New York Knicks in the long run given how effective the triangle offense can be. For now though there are certain to be bumps in the road though hopefully they don’t last too long.
