Although Gerald Green recently professed to ‘loving’ the Phoenix Suns organization, he may not feel the same in a few months if he’s wearing a different jersey.
A high-flying shooting guard who can stretch the floor thanks to his solid outside shooting, Green has become somewhat expendable after the Phoenix Suns not only re-signed Eric Bledsoe, but also agreed to terms with Isaiah Thomas and Zoran Dragic.
A free agent at season end, Zach Lowe of Grantland believes Gerald Green is likely on borrowed time in the Valley of the Sun.
"It’s a matter of math. The Suns just inked Bledsoe, Isaiah Thomas, Zoran Dragic, and the Morii to multiyear contracts, and they’ll get an extra first-round pick from the Lakers at some point over the next three seasons. Barring a big trade, the roster is damn near full going forward. Green is movable, and if the Suns can get a couple of second-rounders for him, they might pull the trigger."
While most Phoenix Suns fans would likely be unhappy with a return that included nothing more than two second-round draft picks, Green’s value simply isn’t that high. On his best day he’s a solid role player with an expiring contract and defensive limitations (despite his athletic ability). More importantly, opposing teams know the Phoenix Suns won’t have much leverage in trade talks and it’s doubtful the team is looking to add any additional salary making draft picks the best type of return.
Gerald Green returning to the Phoenix Suns after the upcoming season is over seems impossible given their current roster makeup, so there’s little reason for the Suns not to get something of value for him while they can.
