Johnson went down with a high ankle sprain in the third quarter of Detroit’s loss to Buffalo two weeks ago and said he doesn’t want to return until he can be the Calvin Johnson who became known as “Megatron.”
His status for Sunday is unknown, but Johnson told the team’s website that he isn’t coming back until he can be the Johnson who is known as one of the NFL’s top wideouts.
"“When I feel great, I’ll be out there,” Johnson said. “Just trying to be smart so we can manage this thing and finish the season strong.“All I can say is day by day with treatment everything that we’re doing is to strengthen that thing. That’s helping and whenever it heals up and whenever it feels like I can do all the things I need to do on the field (I’ll be back).”"
Johnson had been dealing with a lingering ankle problem before the injury became more severe against Buffalo.
"“There’s no point of being on the field if I can’t go out there and do what I have to do and do it to a high level,” Johnson said."
In five games, Johnson has 22 receptions for 348 yards and two touchdowns, but had just three receptions on three targets for 19 yards against the Jets and Bills combined.
Johnson has been an All-Pro pick three straight seasons and had 84 receptions for 1,492 yards and 12 touchdowns last season in just 14 games.
