Cleveland Browns Would Not Have Drafted Blake Bortles No. 4 Overall

The Cleveland Browns would not have drafted Blake Bortles with the no. 4 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft if they had been given that opportunity.

How would Blake Bortles look in a Cleveland Browns’ jersey? More importantly, how would Johnny Manziel have looked holding hanging out in a baseball cap on a different sideline?

It turns out Bortles to the Browns was never a possibility at the no. 4 pick in the draft. Even if the Jaguars had passed on Bortles with the no. 3 overall pick, the Browns would not have selected a quarterback that high. That’s if you believe head coach Mike Pettine, that is.

“There wasn’t any quarterback in the discussion for us at four, but we certainly had a first-round grade on him,” Pettine said, via CBS Cleveland.

The Browns’ head coach also spoke about their surprise when Bortles went as high as he did. “I think it surprised a lot of people that he went there. I thought Jacksonville did a very good job of playing poker with that one. A lot of the information that came out of there, you wouldn’t think that.”

It would appear that the Browns had their eyes on Johnny Football, but they also had their eyes on when they could get him or another quarterback at the right value. They made a few moves to maneuver into different spots in the first round, ultimately getting Manziel with the no. 22 pick. Bortles has played well in a small sample for the hapless Jaguars, and in the meantime, Cleveland has seen Brian Hoyer take a strangle hold of the quarterback job.

Everybody is happy, or so they say. For all the hypothetical scenarios you can think of, it sounds like Bortles to the Browns was probably never going to happen.
