Lorenzo Cain was named the ALCS MVP as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Baltimore Orioles in four games and advanced to the 2014 World Series.

One supposes that they could have split the ALCS MVP trophy into three pieces and given them to the back of that stingy Royals’ bullpen. Save for that, there was no more worthy candidate for the honor than outfielder Lorenzo Cain.

To discuss Cain and his credentials for this award, it is only fitting to start with his defense in the outfield. Spending each game in center field and then right field as part of the team’s customary late-game substitutions, Cain joined Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson, and Nori Aoki to form a rangy outfield that delivered jaw-dropping plays night after night.

The Royals are headed to the World Series because of run prevention, something that was on display in this series. But they still have to score runs to win, even if it’s only two runs a game. Cain shined on the offensive side of things as well, going 8-for-15 with two doubles and five runs scored. It seemed like each Royals’ hitter came through in one big spot or another, but Cain was consistently in the mix as the third hitter in the lineup.

Over the last two weeks, America has received a crash course in the identity of this Kansas City Royals’ team. As the ALCS MVP, Cain is a fitting representative of that identity and how the Royals have put together this run to the World Series.

8-0 in the playoffs and showing no signs of stopping. Lorenzo Cain and the Royals are headed to the World Series.
