When the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Jeremy Lin from the Houston Rockets earlier this past offseason, many believed he would be named the starting point guard out of training camp.
However, the team decided to anoint veteran Steve Nash as their starter with Jeremy Lin set for backup duties. That may be changing in the very near future though as head coach Byron Scott appears ready to promote Jeremy Lin into the Los Angeles Lakers starting lineup citing Steve Nash’s recurring injury problems as a cause for concern.
"Steve Nash has had an incredible career, but the two-time MVP might have to endure a new role in what is probably his final NBA season.Coming off the bench as a backup.Lakers Coach Byron Scott indicated Jeremy Lin could become the starting point guard because of Nash’s recurring back problems, a switch that made sense because of Nash’s on-again, off-again availability."
While Steve Nash is still a wonderful basketball mind, he simply can’t do the things he once did from a physical standpoint. Given that, there’s little reason for the Los Angeles Lakers to run him out there because he’s a liability on both ends of the court.
Nash is not signed beyond this season and has seriously hinted at retirement on more than one occasion, so he has no future with the organization in terms of his on-court contributions. Jeremy Lin meanwhile is a pending free agent and the Los Angeles Lakers are likely interested in seeing what he can bring to the table and if they need to invest in him or let him walk at season end.
Bringing Steve Nash off the bench and controlling his minutes could also make him a more effective player, so regardless of who starts the game, it’s likely to be Jeremy Lin who gets the most minutes and plays down the stretch.
