Robert Griffin III will reclaim his starting quarterback job with the Washington Redskins when he is healthy enough for an NFL game says head coach Jay Gruden.

Although Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden wouldn’t fully commit to Robert Griffin III as the starting quarterback moving forward after his ankle injury, it appears as if he’s had a change of heart.

Gruden, speaking to the media, announced that RGIII would reclaim his spot as the Redskins starter though stated that will only come when Robert Griffin III is healthy both from a physical and mental standpoint.

Griffin has already returned to practice for the Washington Redskins though isn’t practicing in full. That said it appears as if he is getting healthy enough for a potential return, though that’s only from a physical standpoint. The fact that Jay Gruden tossed in the ‘mental’ aspect gives the head coach a bit of wiggle room regarding what he plans to due with current starting quarterback Kirk Cousins.

For what it’s worth, Cousins hasn’t exactly been bad under center though hasn’t exactly been good either. He’s been able to pad his statistics due to the Washington Redskins often trailing in the second half which makes his play look great in the box score, but to the eye it’s far less impressive.

As of right now it doesn’t appear as if RGIII is ready yet and given their Week 10 bye, it’s possible the Washington Redskins may allow Cousins to start until that point. However if the losses continue to mount (currently losers of four straight), the Washington Redskins may be forced to put Robert Griffin III back under center before that time.
