While the New York Mets had a solid season given the vast amount of youth on their roster, it wasn’t good enough to be in contention for a playoff birth and that’s not something the organization will be accepting of. Given that the team is again expected to spend money in free agency though may try to get the best bang for their buck which could include targeting outfielder Nick Markakis.

By no stretch is Markakis a big name nor is he the type of talent to put fans in the seats. He does however routinely produce and is a solid bet to hit .275 and clobber 15 home runs while keeping an elevated on base percentage throughout the season.

More importantly? He’s likely to come affordable which the New York Mets need if they’re planning to fill out their roster. That’s why the New York Post believes the Mets could target the Baltimore Orioles’ outfielder in free agency.

"Still, Markakis’ well-rounded skill set and gamer style should make him popular if he does delve into free agency. The Mets could believe that given playing time to grow, Kirk Nieuwenhuis or Matt den Dekker could be a version of Markakis. But the Mets want to begin winning next year and Markakis could definitely help."

There will certainly be bigger names and more talented players on the market though few (if any) will be the bargain Nick Markakis could be given his cost versus production.

His relatively affordable deal would still allow the New York Mets to add an additional player or two through free agency rather than drying up their bank account with just one big name bat.

With young, elite pitching, the future appears bright for the Metropolitans.
