Alex Morgan To Miss Rest Of USA World Cup Qualifying With Sprained Ankle

USA women’s soccer star Alex Morgan will miss the remainder of World Cup qualifying for the USWNT with a sprained left ankle suffered against Guatemala.

On Friday night, the United States women’s national team faced Guatemala in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship — which is World Cup qualifying for the USWNT — when star forward Alex Morgan went down with a left ankle injury.

It was the same ankle that Morgan previously injured that led to a seven-month layoff that recently ended in June.

On Saturday, Morgan underwent an MRI which confirmed a sprain.

There was no additional damage, but Morgan will miss the remainder of World Cup qualifying during her four to six week recovery period.

“It’s unfortunate timing, but I know my teammates will take care of business and qualify for the World Cup and I’ll be watching from my couch,” said Morgan in a statement from USA soccer. “I have plenty of time to get healthy with a longer break coming up for the team so my job is to focus on the rehab and get back healthy as soon as I can.”

Morgan will leave the team to undergo rehab at home.

“We certainly feel for Alex and of course having her go down is a big loss to our team, but as I’ve often said, one of our strengths is depth and everyone on the roster is prepared to step up,” said Ellis. “After talking with our medical staff and Alex, we all agreed that the best course of action for her is to head home to minimize travel and get into an environment where she can totally focus on recovery.”

Because of Morgan’s injury, the USA women will finish World Cup qualifying with just 19 women on the roster.
