The Minnesota Twins have been looking to replace former manager, Ron Gardenhire, since he was fired following yet another 90 loss
season. Gardenhire held the position for over a decade and the Twins appear to be doing their due diligence in hiring their next manager. However, they may be getting close as they weed out some candidates.
Joe McEwing, the third base coach of the division rival Chicago White Sox has now been eliminated from consideration. According to Darren Wolfson, of 1500 ESPN, sources close to the team indicate that the Twins have moved in a different direction.
McEwing has been a hot name this offseason having interviewed for both the Texas Rangers and the Arizona Diamondbacks vacancies, both positions are now filled. McEwing has found himself interviewing for many, but suiting none at this point.
As the Twins move on from McEwing, they have a stable of other candidates still being considered. Those include, Torey Lovullo of the Red Sox, Sandy Alomar Jr. of the Indians, Demarlo Hale of the Blue jays, and Doug Mientkiewicz, Paul Molitor, and Gene Glynn within the organization.
Terry Ryan, the Twins general manager urged fans that an exhaustive effort would be shown in finding the next manager, one that would look both within and outside of the organization. However, as the process has drug out, it seems more and more likely that the Twins may have liked Mientkiewicz or Molitor all along.
While both of the options would likely be strong fits, the notion that other candidates are being interviewed simply as a PR move is becoming more and more real.
Look for the Twins to announce their successor to Ron Gardenhire in the coming weeks.
