In effort to open a roster spot for Percy Harvin, the New York Jets released wide receiver David Nelson.

On Saturday the New York Jets introduced Percy Harvin whom the acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks on Friday afternoon. Of course with a new player traded for a draft pick, that means a roster spot needs to be vacated and the Jets decided to cut David Nelson in effort to bring Harvin aboard.

A five-year veteran, Nelson played for the Buffalo Bills before joining the New York Jets in 2013 where he played in 12 games starting six of them. He wasn’t exactly a favorite target of quarterback Geno Smith, though was serviceable when on the field as he hauled in 36 catches for 423 yards in his limited duty. He also grabbed two touchdowns in the process though wasn’t of significant use after the team acquired Eric Decker in the offseason.

Now with Harvin aboard, there simply wasn’t a need for Nelson who received his walking papers.

If there’s any silver lining for David Nelson it’s that he could get an opportunity elsewhere with a better quarterback as he’s proven himself to be a solid though unspectacular possession receiver. Not overly quick or fast, Nelson isn’t a guy who’ll be able to streak down the sidelines and beat the defense for an explosive play so he’ll need to likely play between the sticks if he is picked up.

David Nelson had started five of six games for the New York Jets this season though only had eight receptions good for 65 yards. To make matters worse he also fumbled twice which all but exhausted what little confidence the club had in him.

The former Florida talent has 10 touches on 138 career NFL receptions.
