It wasn’t that long ago when the Seattle Seahawks decided to part with significant assets to acquire Percy Harvin in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.
Not only did they give up draft picks but they also signed Harvin to a hefty contract as many believed he was the key piece to Seattle’s offensive success moving forward. Of course, that didn’t prove to be true as Harvin looked to be just another player with the Seattle Seahawks who at times struggled to find a role for the electric wideout. That’s of course when he could actually play which was not often given he was almost always nursing some type of injury.
Given all that the Seattle front office decided to pull the plug on Harvin’s time with the Seahawks and traded him to the New York Jets on Friday afternoon, though admit the decision to do so was tough.
“Although this was an extremely difficult decision, we are constantly evaluating our team and believe at this time, that this is in our best interest to move the team forward,” general manager John Schneider said. “We thank Percy for his efforts that contributed to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory and wish him well.”
What’s Schneider supposed to say? That he and the organization made a drastic mistake in acquiring Harvin and had to get what they could for the oft-injured wide receiver?
Given the lack of production on field and the alleged drama off the field, there wasn’t much reason for the Seahawks to keep Percy Harvin around. He may play better with the Jets but simply ridding themselves of Harvin will likely be better for the Seahawks in the long run, especially given he was likely to be released at season end.
