In its 17-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, the Buffalo Bills suffered two major injuries. Running backs C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson were each carted off with injuries during the first half. Both were immediately ruled out for the game.

Anthony Dixon, the Bills’ only healthy back, rushed 13 times for 51 yards.Buffalo scrapped together an ugly win, but the focus will now be on the health of Jackson and Spiller.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Spiller will undergo surgery Monday to repair a broken collarbone while Jackson with have an MRI for his groin injury.

Either back being out for the Bills could be crushing. Buffalo’s offense is already one of the worst in the league, and it doesn’t help that their options at quarterback are E.J. Manuel and Kyle Orton. They are 4-3 and in second place in a weak AFC East, but that won’t hold up long without their running backs.

Jackson has 227 yards on 52 carries (4.4 yards per carry) and a touchdown while Spiller has 234 yards on 68 carries. Jackson is the team’s second-leading receiver, too, with 30 receptions for 245 yards and a touchdown.

Spiller, who was being outplayed by Jackson, was still a scoring threat from anywhere on the field that defenses had to pay attention to. As long as these backs are out, the only dangerous threat defenses have to worry about is rookie Sammy Watkins.
