Believe it or not, Jamaal Charles has been the Kansas City Chiefs running back for seven years now. It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long, but Charles became the Chiefs all-time leading rusher Sunday with a 16-yard run against the division rival San Diego Chargers Sunday.

You can see his incomparable vision and quickness on this run. His natural talent and patience has set him a part for years. He’s one of the few every-down runners left in the NFL.

Charles entered the game with 6,018 rushing yards in seven seasons (though he missed nearly the entire 2011-2012 season), behind only Priest Holmes’ 6,070 yards in six seasons. Charles broke the record on nearly 200 fewer attempts, averaging more than five yards per carry for his career. Holmes averaged 4.59 yards for his career (and mostly behind one of the greatest offensive lines ever assembled, no less).

For much of his career, Charles has been performing in the shadow of Adrian Peterson. But Charles has been putting up hall of fame numbers for years and never really gets the credit he deserves.

This record really puts things in perspective. I grew up watching Priest Holmes, who was widely regarded as the best runner in the league for a couple of years while playing in a league with LaDainian Tomlinson and Ricky Williams. It seems Charles never had the same league-wide recognition, but he should.
