While Travis Ishikawa was the hero of the National League Championship Series thanks to his series clinching home run, the veteran contemplated retirement earlier this season as he struggled in the minor leagues. A first baseman by trade, playing left field isn’t likely something he’ll continue to do which is why the San Francisco Giants could be interested in Nick Markakis come free agency.

That’s the word from Nick Cafardo who believes the Giants are a team to watch in the Markakis sweepstakes.

"The Orioles are expected to decline Markakis’s $17.5 million option and pay him a $2 million buyout, make him a qualifying offer, and then try to reach a long-term deal with him. Markakis loves playing in Baltimore, though he’d likely get a lot of attention on the market. One team to watch for would be the Giants, who though relying heavily on Travis Ishikawa for big hits, would likely not commit to him as an everyday left fielder."

In addition to the San Francisco Giants, the New York Mets have been rumored to have interest in Nick Markakis so there’s no doubt he’ll receive significant interest assuming he is to hit the open market.

While not exactly a ‘name player’, Nick Markakis has proven himself to be a very solid player as he’s good both offensively and defensively. No he isn’t going to hit 35 home runs nor steal 55 bases but he’ll given you some decent pop and routinely find himself irritating opposing pitching thanks to his elevated on base percentage.

A return to the Baltimore Orioles isn’t out of the question though a starting role on a team who has played in three of the last five World Series’ may be too good of an offer to pass up.
