Being an NFL quarterback means you get the glory when things go well and when they don’t you’re often looked at as the goat. There are exceptions to that rule however and Drew Brees may be one of the few untouchable signal callers in the game, at least during the regular season.
Still the New Orleans Saints quarterback believes he was a major reason for Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions which included a late fourth quarter interception.
“The worst feeling in professional sports is when you feel like you let your team down. And that’s the way I feel right now,” Brees said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “You’ve gotta know when to take a chance, when to try to fit a ball in there, or when to throw it away, take a sack, scramble, whatever it might be, and make sure the ball stays in your hands. And unfortunately that’s a critical time of the game where a turnover cannot happen, and I’m responsible for that. That one’s on me.”
While Brees is correct in his assessment regarding the turnover, he was also without his favorite weapon in Jimmy Graham who played sparingly due to injury. By no stretch is that an excuse but Drew Brees did slice and dice one of the best defenses in the NFL for the vast majority of the afternoon.
Unfortunately for he and the New Orleans Saints, he made a poor decision at the worst time possible though it’s difficult to blame the loss on the Pro Bowl talent even if he believes the heart breaker is on his shoulders.
Currently Drew Brees and his Saints sit at 2-4 and need a drastic turnaround if they’re to find themselves back in playoff contention.
