Infielder Jayson Nix has been well-traveled this MLB season, and his travels this year will end with a trip to the World Series, as the Kansas City Royals added him to their roster, dropping Christian Colon.

The Kansas City Royals have made one change to their roster for the World Series, adding utility player Jayson Nix to the squad and dropping infielder Christian Colon prior to the beginning of the World Series, when the Royals host the San Francisco Giants tonight.

It’s the end of a long, strange season for Nix, who has been with four organizations in 2014, and played every infield position and right field this year. He signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Rays in January, and then was purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies right before opening day. The Phillies released Nix on May 13, and four days later he re-joined the Rays, who would later release him on August 1. Two days later, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed him, but he was eventually waived and picked up by the Royals on August 28.

Now, his season ends with a trip to the World Series, although playing time isn’t guaranteed. Nix has had a poor season in 2014, hitting only one home run and slashing .120/.169/.157 across the four teams in just 83 at bats, including just eight hit-less at bats with Kansas City, with an RBI and six strikeouts.

Still, Nix brings versatility, or at least more than Colon brought to the club. Colon is primarily a second baseman, and though he was the fourth-overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, his stock has fallen considerably, and it’s unclear what the rookie’s role will be with the Royals next season, if he’s with them at all. Colon had just two at bats during the playoffs so far, so this move could simply be about getting a guy like Nix who can back up at multiple positions if needed, though given Nix’s production this season, Royals fans should probably hope he’s not needed.
