The Miami Dolphins have signed former University of Miami wide receiver LaRon Byrd to a practice squad contract.

After a strong showing against the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon, the Miami Dolphins may not need another offensive weapon but you can never have too much of a good thing. That’s likely why the ‘Phins decided to take a chance on former University of Miami star LaRon Byrd, who they signed to the practice squad on Tuesday morning.

Byrd, who went undrafted has bounced around with both the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals though has failed to stick with both organizations.

He’s hopeful that the third time will be a charm as he returns back to his former stomping grounds.

LaRon Byrd hasn’t seen much NFL action outside of his sort stint with the Arizona Cardinals where he caught one ball on two targets through four games. He has also participated on some special teams though his chances have been few and far between.

It’s unlikely he’ll get much of an opportunity with the Miami Dolphins, at least initially as he still has plenty of room for improvement before he’ll be able to become a mainstay on a 53-man roster. His best chance of making such happen will be hard work in practice as that’s often the reason you eventually get your call up as teams attempt to replace injured players.

For the Miami Dolphins, it’s a very low-risk roll of the dice in hopes that they’ll be able to snag themselves a rotational wide receiver. For LaRon Byrd, it might be his last chance at securing himself a roster spot in the NFL.
