A former fifth-round pick, Jeremy Kerley has had a solid NFL career though isn’t exactly what you’d call a franchise wide receiver. Hell, he isn’t even a Pro Bowl wide receiver but the New York Jets are willing to commit to him long-term as they’re expected to sign the wideout to a four-year contract extension.

Kerley, who is a four-year veteran has become a versatile player for the New York Jets as not only does he catch passes but he also helps with kick returns. Still, the timing of the alleged extension is a bit odd considering the New York Jets traded for Percy Harvin last week.

While Kerley’s versatility is welcomed, Percy Harvin essentially plays the same role and does so at a more efficient clip when healthy. Of course Percy Harvin is likely to cost a lot more money than Kerley but it’s still an interesting decision. The deal will include $5.4 million of guaranteed money.

As for Jeremy Kerley, he has yet to grab more than 56 catches in any of his previous three NFL seasons and has at times been thought to be a bit of a disappointment. Though in fairness to the former TCU product, can you really be a disappointment if you’re a solid player who was selected in the fifth-round?

Kerley has seven touchdowns during his three-plus year career and will likely be playing behind both Eric Decker and Percy Harvin moving forward. In six games this season, Kerley has 22 receptions (one went for a touchdown) and is averaging just under 30-yards per game.
