Madison Bumgarner started Game 1 of the World Series for the San Francisco Giants. James Shields started for the Kansas City Royals. Bumgarner pitched like an ace, Shields surely did not, and the Giants cruised for an easy 7-1 victory to take a 1-0 series lead.
The damages started right away against Shields, with Pablo Sandoval drawing first blood with an RBI double.
The trouble continued with the very next batter, as heralded “emotional leader” Hunter Pence blasted a home run over the right-center field wall.
That would prove to be just about all the support that Bumgarner needed. The best pitcher in the postseason just kept up his dominance. Bumgarner went seven innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out five hitters and allowed just one walk.
This sums up how the night went for Royals’ hitters against Bumgarner:
On the other side of things, “Big Game” James Shields continues to be a disaster during these playoffs. The Royals’ top starter only made it through three innings of work before handing things over to Danny Duffy in long relief. For the most part, Duffy held his own nicely.
Things did get away from Duffy a bit before his exit, however, as this turned into a blowout in favor of the Giants. Joe Panik delivered an RBI triple.
Pablo Sandoval then tacked on the seventh run for the Giants en route to their easy victory.
Bumgarner was dominant, Pence and Sandoval were stars on offense, and the Giants started the World Series with a statement victory on the road.
Jake Peavy will start Game 2 on Wednesday night for the Giants opposite Yordano Ventura for the Royals.
