While boxing referee’s need to be cautious of where they’re at in the ring as to avoid any wayward punches, they’d never expect to become the target of such. However that’s exactly what happened to one referee who was assaulted by Croatian boxer Vido Loncar.
Following a loss to Algirdas Baniulis in the light-heavyweight division, Loncar became engaged and then went after the referee, assaulting him in rather horrific fashion.
Loncar pummeled the referee and then stood over the top of him as he began unloading punch after punch as the referee lay helplessly on the ground. Shockingly it took a few moments for those in the arena to understand what was actually taking place. Once it was understood that Vido Loncar was attacking the referee, spectators and arena officials made their way to the ring to stop the assault.
The Croatian boxer was arrested and has now been banned for life from the sport by the International Boxing Association.
"The International Boxing Association (AIBA) president, Ching-Kuo Wu, said: “AIBA and the entire boxing family have zero tolerance for this sort of behaviour.”Loncar and his coaches are barred from participating in all AIBA competitions pending further decision by the AIBA’s disciplinary commission."
It’s currently not known what type of charges that Vido Loncar is facing though in the United States we’ve seen professional fighters booked for using their fists as deadly weapons.
As for the referee, his medical status is currently not known. He was taken to the hospital after the attack and an update on his condition has not been released.
