40. Final. 7. 7. 2

The World Series is tied up at 1-1 after the Kansas City Royals pulled away for a 7-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Going into the sixth inning of this game, it looked like we were headed for a nail-biting game. The score was tied 2-2. Royals’ manager Ned Yost fired a number of aggressive moves as he tried to set his team up for the win. Bruce Bochy countered with key decisions of his own. Everything changed in that inning, as the Royals charged out to a five-run rally and never looked back.

The Royals won by a final score of 7-2, and the World Series will head back to San Francisco this weekend tied up at 1-1.

Giants’ starting pitcher Jake Peavy looked like he was cruising as he took the mound for the decisive sixth inning. He had allowed just two runs, had thrown less than 60 pitches, and had retired 10 straight hitters. That success might have inspired a false sense of security for Bochy, who did not fire up his bullpen until Peavy had allowed a lead-off base-runner.

Alas, the rally had already started, and the Giants’ bullpen simply could not put out the fire. Billy Butler drove in one run, Salvador Perez doubled in two runs, and Omar Infante hit a home run to make it 7-2.

Prior to that crucial sixth inning, both teams scratched out runs early before the respective starting pitchers settled in. Peavy surrendered runs in the first inning on a Butler hit and in the second inning on an Alcides Escobar double. Yordano Ventura allowed a lead-off home run to Gregor Blanco and an RBI double to Brandon Belt before stopping the damage and handing the ball to his super bullpen in the top of the sixth.

Things got a little heated after the Infante home run, as Giants’ reliever Hunter Strickland got mad and started yelling at Perez and others. That combined with the authoritative victory might make some people inclined to think that the Royals have gotten in the Giants’ heads and taken control of this series.

Just like it would have been foolish to read too much into the Giants’ big win in Game 1, we would be wise not to read too much into the results of this game. What seems clear is that these teams are fairly evenly matched and we should be in for an interesting series.

There is an off day Thursday before the World Series resumes for three games this weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in San Francisco at AT&T Park.
