Former Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson says Klay Thompson will get a maximum contract.

Although Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors have yet to agree on a contract extension, former head coach Mark Jackson suggests it’s simply a matter of time until the guard gets paid.

Thompson, who is currently eligible for the extension has reportedly been discussing such with the Warriors though with the October 31st deadline quickly approaching, some question if the two sides will be able to beat the clock.

Even if they can’t, Klay Thompson will become a restricted free agent and still stands to cash in according to Jackson.

“He’s a guy that will make a boatload of money and in my opinion the best two-way shooting guard in the world, and it’s not even close,” the ESPN analyst said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters.

“He’s got to get (the max contract).”

At this point it’s difficult to imagine Klay Thompson not getting the maximum contract possible given the Golden State Warriors opted to pull the plug on a potential Kevin Love deal that would have included Thompson. Add in that the NBA’s salary cap is expected to go up in the next few years and it seems likely a team would break the bank to bring the young guard aboard in free agency.

Thankfully for the Golden State Warriors, they’ll hold Klay Thompson’s rights in restricted free agency (assuming no deal is reached before the deadline) and will have the power to match any offer he receives.

Given all of that, the chances of Klay Thompson not playing for the Golden State Warriors organization for a long time appear rather minimal.

For what it’s worth, Thompson has stated he’d like to get a deal completed before October 31st, so the clock is ticking.
