A Cheadle, Greater Manchester father is auctioning off the right to choose which team his son will cheer for.

Soccer in the United States isn’t that big, regardless of what people think or say. It’s a whole different ball of wax in Europe where soccer is a way of life.

According to an article written by Mike Keegan of BBC Sport, 30-year-old Ian Charters has decided to take things to the next level by auctioning off his seven-month-old son Eddie’s future soccer allegiance between either Manchester City or Manchester United.

You may think that is crazy, but it’s for an extremely good cause.

Eddie Charters was born six weeks premature and spent four weeks recovering at Stockport’s Stepping Hill hospital.

Keegan reported that Eddie’s weight dropped as he dealt with jaundice and digestive system problems.

In the article, Ian Charters said, “I wanted to do something for the Bliss charity  and so I am going to run the London Marathon next year.  I set myself a target of £2,500 and was thinking of ways to raise money when this popped into my head.”

Charters is a Watford fan but knows his son has no chance of following in his footsteps.

The auction begins this evening on eBay and Charters is excited for what is yet to come.

“It’s a bit of fun. I’ll buy him a shirt and when he’s old enough I’ll take him to a match. I’ll make sure he supports them. It’s mostly City fans where we live but it’s 50/50 at work. Everyone thinks it’s a good idea.”

Manchester City faces West Ham United on Saturday while The Red Devils take on Chelsea Sunday.
