The New England Patriots entered the 2014
season once again hoping to be a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl.
After adding cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, they believed their defense may finally be nearing the level it was on during their dynasty era. Instead, the defense has struggled and the Patriots have once again decimated by injuries. The Patriots’ leader on defense, linebacker Jerod Mayo, is out for the season (for the second straight year) and plenty of other players have been banged up.
Earlier this week, the Patriots were dealt a big blow when a report surfaced that their best and most consistent pass rusher, defensive end Chandler Jones would miss about a month because of a hip injury. Although that would be tough on their defense, most believed the Patriots would be to stay afloat and manufacture stops until Chandler Jones returned.
His return, however, is in question.
According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Chandler Jones’ injury is worse than many imagined and the Patriots are preparing for the worst. Howe’s source reports the Patriots “fear a worst-case scenario that could keep Jones out of the lineup for the rest of the regular season” and “best case, Jones will be out six weeks from the point of the injury, but they were not optimistic about the short end of the timetable upon the initial diagnosis.”
This is about as big of a loss as the Patriots could possibly have on defense. Chandler Jones was off to a nice start, recording 4.5 sacks so far this season. Without him, the Patriots are going to have a lot of trouble getting to the quarterback.
He has 22 sacks in his career.
