The Baltimore Ravens would have shocked me had they not managed to remain competitive in this game, but it ultimately ended the way many suspected it would- with the Cincinnati Bengals advancing to a perfect 2-0 record against the Baltimore squad.

The Baltimore Ravens started off the season with a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals 23-16. Unsurprising, since Joe Flacco doesn’t pose the best record against the AFC North franchise. He’s now 7-7 against them. Flacco’s up-and-down play against the Bengals was glaringly obvious in the back-and-forth dynamic of the whole game.

The Ravens are 5-0 in games where they have rushed over 120 yards, so it’s no surprise they struggled in a game where those kinds of numbers weren’t being met. Flacco had trouble completing passes, and the team was unable to forge ahead enough to come back from a disastrous first quarter that saw the Ravens go scoreless.

The game volleyed from the Bengals starting off strong to the Ravens pulling taking the second quarter, then both teams spent the final thirty minutes of play posting an impressive 38 combined points. Each team held the lead at one point or another, but ultimately the Ravens were unable to improve to 6-2 and the Bengals took home their second win against the rival franchise this season.

Bengals’ quarterback Andy Dalton played very well, only allowing the Ravens to truly surge ahead with 6:47 left in the fourth quarter when a fumble gave Baltimore the opportunity to squeak ahead with a 21-20 lead via touchdown. Dalton completed 21 of 28 passes, though, a significantly stronger stat than the 17-of-34 performance Ravens fans saw out of Flacco.

The star of the Ravens game was rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro. the 22-year-old running back who brought the team two touchdowns. Even his strong play wasn’t good enough to pull the team ahead of the Bengals for lon, though, as Dalton rushed for a grand yard-and-a-half to complete Cincinnati’s final touchdown with only a minute left to go in the game.

This win, which put the Bengals at 4-2-1 for the season overall, helped boost them to first in the AFC North. Expect to see their record continue to improve, as they host the Jaguars next Sunday.
