The Detroit Lions earned another last second victory while the Atlanta Falcons suffered another crippling defeat as the Lions rallied from a 21-0 deficit to top the Falcons 22-21.

The Falcons took a 21-0 lead into the half and appeared to be firing on all cylinders on offense while shutting down Matthew Stafford and the Lions’ offense on the other side. A field goal by new kicker Matt Prater cut the lead to 21-3 and a 59-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to Golden Tate put the Lions back in the game. They added another Prater field goal early in the fourth quarter and then struck on a five-yard pass from Stafford to Theo Riddick but the two-point conversion attempt intended for Tate fell incomplete.

The Lions got the ball back on their own seven with just 1:38 to play. Stafford immediately found Tate for 32 yards and then Riddick for 20. They moved to the 25 and set up for a 43-yard field goal. Prater set up but sent it wide right giving the Falcons an apparent victory. However, the Lions were called for delay of game, which is a dead ball foul. Prater moved back five yards and tried again from 48 yards away. This time, the kick was good and the Lions earned a 22-21 victory.

The Lions’ kicking woes have been widely documented. Prater, who was cut by the Denver Broncos after his suspension for substance abuse (alcohol), is their third kicker this season. Their first kicker, Nate Freese, went just three-of-seven. Alex Henery was cut after going one-of-five. Prater entered the game hitting just two of his first four kicks but went three-of-three on Sunday.
