Sunday’s Oakland Raiders–Cleveland Browns game tested the limits of taste and what actually defined professional football. At the end of the day, someone had to win, as the Browns strung together enough production to keep the Raiders winless with a 23-13 win in front of Browns fans who can only be described as very, very loyal.
The loss dropped the Raiders to 0-7 and tied the team’s longest losing streak in franchise history, which occurred in 1962. More painful for Oakland’s fans is the fact that Sunday may have marked the last best chance for a win this season, as the team owns the toughest schedule in the league.
As for Sunday’s latest debacle, the Raiders managed just a pair of Sebastian Janikowski field goals in the second quarter, as he connected from 46 and 38 yards, leaving them down 9-6 at intermission. Browns kicker Billy Cundiff countered Janikowski with field goals from 52, 33 and 26 yards.
Both end zones remained lonely until Brian Hoyer hit Andrew Hawkins on a 4-yard touchdown pass 43 seconds into the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 16-6. A Barkevious Mingo fumble recovery at the Raiders 9 set the stage for Ben Tate to score on the next play to clinch the contest for the Browns, who improve to 4-3.
Oakland managed to generate a touchdown, as rookie Derek Carr hit Andre Holmes with a 10-yard score with seven seconds left.
Surprisingly, neither team was able to establish a running despite the fact both entered the game with run defenses ranked at the bottom of the league. Cleveland managed just 40 yards on 24 carries, while Oakland generated 71 yards on 22 attempts.
