Both Tristan Thompson and the Cleveland Cavaliers are hopeful they’ll agree on a contract extension before the NBA‘s October 31st deadline.

More from Cleveland Cavaliers

After acquiring both LeBron James and Kevin Love during the offseason, the Cleveland Cavaliers appear to have their franchise pillars set for the foreseeable future. They still need to build around their stars however and one player they hope to keep long-term is forward/center Tristan Thompson.

Eligible for a contract extension, both Tristan Thompson and the Cleveland Cavaliers have been attempting to iron out a new deal but have struggled to find middle ground. Now it appears as talks have stalled, though both sides want to get a deal completed before Friday’s deadline according to Brian Windhorst.

“The sides both remain hopeful they will get a long-term deal with Thompson worked out this week, sources said. Thompson, a big man who specializes in offensive rebounding, is believed to be looking for something around the $12 million-per-season extensions the Denver Nuggets gave Kenneth Faried this month and the Utah Jazz gave Derrick Favors last October.”

Understandably that’s a lot of money to shell out to a rotational player, especially when you’re going to have two of the highest paid players in the league on your books in both James and Love.

Still, to keep a championship level team you have to spend money and that is something the Cleveland Cavaliers appear willing to do. It’s just a matter of how much they’re willing to invest in Tristan Thompson, who probably isn’t worth what he’s requesting.

It may be a bullet the team needs to bite however as Thompson has become very good friends with LeBron James and also shares representation.

If the two aren’t able to agree before the October 31st deadline, Tristan Thompson will become a restricted free agent at season end.
