The Kansas City Royals are reportedly fearing the worst for pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer and his shoulder, and the 2012 fifth-overall pick in the MLB Draft’s career is in jeopardy.

It doesn’t look like the Kansas City Royals will be getting good news on recently re-injured pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer:

Shoulder surgery seems to be the worst-case scenario for Zimmer, the Royals’ number-two prospect and the fifth-overall pick by the team in the 2012 MLB Draft, but the 23-year old right-hander’s promising career has been almost completely derailed by injuries ever since. He pitched in just 4.2 innings in 2014 due to a lat strain and shoulder tendinitis, and left his second start in the Arizona Fall League after just an inning due to his most recent injury.

Zimmer hasn’t been pitching for very long, as he was mainly a third baseman until his sophomore year in college, so it’s possible these injuries are the results of stress on an arm not used to the violent motion of throwing a baseball. But shoulder surgery is never a good thing for a pitcher, and it’s possible Zimmer could see most of his 2015 season wiped out as well. Losing two straight years is a serious setback in Zimmer’s development for the Royals, so it will be interesting to see if the team can expect him to be a factor at all next year.
