Sources within the Detroit Lions organization told MMQB that defensive tackle Nick Fairley’s injury suffered in Week 8 could be ‘bad’.

Peter King reports in his MMQB piece that Lions defensive Nick Fairley could be out for as much as the rest of the 2014 season with a knee injury suffered against the Atlanta Falcons in London. Sources indicated to King that the injury is now considered roughly the opposite of good.

“The Lions were initially heartened that vital defensive tackle Nick Fairley hadn’t suffered a season-ending knee injury in London Sunday,” King writes. “But this morning I am hearing it’s bad. We’ll see what the MRI shows later today. The Lions can’t keep living on the edge the way they’ve been lately.”

This would be bad news for the Lions and worse news for Fairley, who wanted a long term contract extension from the Lions. Even worse, the Lions have drawn their greatest strength from the interior defensive line. On a team previously known for its passing offense, it’s the defense that’s taken center stage in 2014, ranking near the top of the NFL. Fairley and Ndamukong Suh were a big part of that.

As for Fairley’s contract talks, the injury could obviously put everything on hold. The team will want to know the extent of the injury and Fairley will still want to get paid when his rookie contract expires in 2015. Until further details emerge, we wish Fairley the best and hope for a speedy return.
