While stadium’s are just that in most professional sports, there’s a special place in the heart of baseball fans for ballparks.

Almost every baseball stadium has some type of iconic lure, be it a memory, special place in the ballpark or a unique quirk. For Minute Maid Park, home to the Houston Astros, that’s the famed ‘Tal’s Hill’ which sits just under the wall in dead center field.

It’s not very often a ball will travel out to the oddly placed hill but it certainly makes for an interesting play when it does.

However that could be coming to an end as the Houston Astros are currently mulling renovating Minute Maid Park which could include the removal of Tal’s Hill.

“It won’t be this year. It would be after next year,” team president of business operations Reid Ryan. “People talk about Tal’s Hill. ‘Is Tal’s Hill going away?’ We’re going to look at designs of, ‘What would that look like if we took it away?’”

Many have begrudged the Houston Astros for putting the random change of elevation in the outfield and very few players like it, especially those who have to field balls in the area occasionally. Still, it has become as much of a trademark of Minute Maid Park as the train centered above left field.

Sure, it’s gimmicky in nature but it would still be sad to see the hill removed.

Thankfully that doesn’t appear to be in the plans for the 2015 season though it’s possible the mini mountain, which was named after former team president Tal Smith could be on borrowed time.
